The House of Angels

The House of Angels is an incredible hospice situated in the slums of Addis Ababa. Although the people who arrive here are among the most desperate on earth, nobody is turned away.

A visit to the House of Angels is both harrowing and inspirational. Many of those in need have been left in the alleyways outside the hospice by family members who are no longer able to cope. In some cases, the dying are brought to the nuns by total strangers who have found them in the street, too weak to even move.

The nuns who run the hospice work tirelessly to help the sick and the dying who simply have nowhere else to go and no-one else to turn to. It is often a last resort for the city's most despairing people, both young and old.

Fighting daily for the lives of their patients, the House of Angels ask for nothing in return. Sadly, not everyone can be saved – but those who die do so with a dignity not afforded to them on the street.

A Safe Haven

The nuns also run an orphanage for children who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDs. Many of the children are themselves infected with the HIV virus and some will not survive their teens. Here they are given a home and cared for.

Against the odds the orphanage is a happy place with many of the children being successfully adopted. It is clean, bright and modern and the children are given food, schooling and the safety of knowing that they are cared for.

How can you help?

Ethiopiaid has worked with the House of Angels since 1993. Having seen first hand their remarkable work, we feel compelled to support them.

The hospice has basic overheads to cover which include medical supplies, food and maintenance costs. With your support we can continue to provide the funds needed so that many others can be helped.
