Focus on Children at Risk
Ethiopia has a relatively young population compared to the developed world with 51% of Ethiopians being under 18. Many of these children are severely disadvantaged simply by virtue of being born into a desperately poor country.
Focus on Children at Risk was established with the aim of nurturing and protecting these children so that they can achieve their full potential and benefit society. They do this through education, teaching some of the poorest children in Ethiopia who would otherwise not have access to schooling.
Focus run three main kinds of educational programs:
1. Alternative Basic Education
This is basic literacy and numeracy classes for severely disadvantaged children with the aim of giving each child the best possible start. This means the children are well-educated enough to be able to join mainstream schooling at a later date.
2. School Sponsorship
Focus sponsor as many children as they can through formal schooling, even paying for costs like school uniforms. In this way, they give disadvantaged children an opportunity for Education that would otherwise be unattainable.
3. Education for Safety
Focus also use their educational expertise to help protect vulnerable youngsters. They provide teaching on issues that are a threat to the children they teach, including HIV/AIDs and child abuse.
Ethiopiaid has been supporting Focus since 1995. The money we donate goes towards covering all overheads, including what is currently their most urgent need: building repair and maintenance.
We can only continue to support Focus on Children at Risk with your help.
